Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) is sponsoring an underprivileged youth from the Montfort Youth Centre, Malacca to undergo a vocational training programme and complete the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM). Staying true to its Community Development pillar, YSD believes in providing opportunity for youths in general to better their lives by obtaining the right skills and knowledge, for them to be fit for employment upon graduation.
The Montfort Youth Centre, located in Kampung Baru Ayer Salak, Malacca has been running vocational training programmes in Motor Vehicles Mechanics and Computer Maintenance since its establishment in 2001. These two programmes are in line with the National Syllabus and allow the students to be certified through the SKM examination.
YSD’s commitment to this programme is to sponsor a student to complete a two-year course in SKM. YSD’s contribution not only pays for the tuition fees, it also covers food and lodging while completing the two-year course. The selected youth had to undergo a thorough selection process by the centre, as the centre believes that help should be given to those in need and are willing to work hard to improve their quality of life.
A few success stories were shared during YSD’s visit to the centre. One of the graduates from the centre is currently employed by a prominent motor vehicle supplier in Malaysia. Another graduate returned to the centre to become a trainer in the Motor Vehicles Mechanics programme, while two others decided to further their studies at diploma levels at private institutions in Malaysia. These graduates truly inspire the current students at the centre, proving that they too can be successful in life with hard work and perseverance.
