In support of the performing arts, YSD has committed RM50,000 to sponsor Dancing My Shiva, a production by two eminent artistes – international soloist Mavin Khoo and world renowned vocalist OS Arun – coming together through the traditional framework of the Bharata Natyam repertoire.
Mavin Khoo is an established dancer and performer, based in the United Kingdom. His studied Bharata Natyam under maestro Adyar K. Lakshman in India, ballet with Marian St. Claire and Michael Beare in London and contemporary dance at New York’s Merce Cunningham studio. Recently, he was called to perform Queen of England and President of India to mark 2010 Commonwealth Games in India. Mavin Khoo has also taught ballet and contemporary dance at Danceworks (London) and Middlesex University, Central School of Ballet.
The show, Dancing My Shiva, was on 31 July and 1 August 2010 at the Dewan Auditorium, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, under the patronage of Yang Teramat Mulia Dr. Raja Nazrin, Raja Muda Perak.
YSD’s contribution to the production of Dancing My Shiva helped the organisers put together a much anticipated performance by two world-renowned artistes that highlighted one of the oldest forms of classical Indian dance, well known for its grace, purity, tenderness and sculptural poses. Support for this project is YSD’s first initiative to increase awareness of classical Indian dance in Malaysia, aimed inter alia at encouraging the appreciation of traditional dance among Malaysians.
