YAYASAN SIME DARBY COMMEMORATES THE IMPACT OF ITS WORK WITH BENEFICIARIES AT RUBY JUBILEE CELEBRATION

Kuala Lumpur, 17 June 2022 – Today, Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), one of the oldest corporate foundations in Malaysia, celebrated the 40th anniversary of its establishment. Together with its current and former Governing Council members; the Board of Directors and Senior Management of its three donor companies, Sime Darby Berhad, Sime Darby Plantation Berhad and Sime Darby Property Berhad; and its project partners, the celebration commemorated the impact of YSD's initiatives over the past four decades. YSD also celebrated the momentous milestone by committing to create more impact in the future by continuously making positive changes as long as the charity foundation is able to, with its theme "Commitment for Good".

The celebration held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre (SDCC) was hosted by YSD Chairman, Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar.

"The success of our efforts is only made possible by the hard work of our beneficiaries and project partners, encouraged by the contributions, goodwill, and support of YSD's generous donors – the three Sime Darby companies. We are honoured to be executing numerous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives alongside these organisations, all towards the objective of garnering the most impact under our five pillars. YSD has awarded scholarships and bursaries, as well as contributed to long term and one-off projects and supported emergency relief initiatives, while working with likeminded and sincere partners," remarked the Chairman.

The corporate foundation was established as the philanthropic arm of the Sime Darby Group. It began by awarding prestigious scholarships to outstanding students to further their studies at Ivy League universities. Now, YSD's work revolves around its five pillars – Education, Environment, Community & Health, Sports and Arts & Culture – as established by former Chairman Tun Musa Hitam.

At the jubilee festivities, YSD paid tribute to its partner organisations and individuals who were behind the impactful initiatives supported by YSD, exhibiting the multifaceted positive value of and changes resulting from their efforts.

Today, YSD has approximately 100 long-term ongoing projects at any one time. The foundation has committed over RM380 million under the Education pillar and more than RM620 million towards the Environment, Community & Health, Sports, and Arts & Culture pillars since its inception. In addition to offering scholarships and bursaries to deserving underprivileged students, YSD has also supported emergency relief initiatives amid natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this special celebration, there were presentations by the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) led by Dr Wong Siew Te, Layar Liar Malaysia led by Lara Ariffin, Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) led by Prof Dr Teo Soo Hwang, Sime Darby Football Club (SDFC), and Muhammad Firdaus Abu Hassan, YSD's Special Needs Scholar.

The children of Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) and the Teochew Puppet & Opera House took to the stage to give a dance performance and a special performance on the cultural heritage of the Teochew puppetry, respectively.

Throughout its forty-year journey, the foundation has undertaken numerous projects, serving the underprivileged and marginalised communities across the nation, supporting their aspirations to lead and make a sustainable impact and difference in the lives of others.

Dr Yatela Zainal Abidin, CEO of YSD, expressed her pride in celebrating this memorable occasion. "I am blessed to have had the privilege of serving YSD for more than 12 of its 40 years, and work hand in hand with my Council and the three Sime Darby companies to achieve YSD's noble vision and mission with the expansion of our team who have worked night and day, without rest during weekends and holidays especially when all of us have to come together to provide urgent crucial support to the needy during disasters. I am bursting with pride to be celebrating our 40th anniversary with the YSD team, beneficiaries, partners, and all of our stakeholders today. There will continue to be hurdles ahead, but I am confident that we shall be continuing to make a positive impact, and we look forward to the coming decades!"

As YSD celebrates its ruby jubilee this year, the foundation invites its members to reflect on all they have accomplished together over the last four decades and look forward to the opportunities ahead.
