Kuala Lumpur, 27th April 2021 - Aligning with Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD)’s objective of providing equal opportunity and quality education for all, the foundation is providing a total of RM2 million in funds for a professional welding certification programme conducted by The Welding Institute (TWI). TVET education has become increasingly necessary, according to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as it equips one with skills that promise greater economic opportunities.
This programme is offered to asnaf (eligible to receive Zakat aid collected from the Muslim community) and tahfiz students to improve their standard of living through access to quality education, in line with one of YSD’s Education pillar objectives. The 4-month certification programme aims to empower the students with internationally recognised vocational and technical skills as well as personal development and soft skills to enhance their job marketability.
“Carried out by TWI, the programme assists tahfiz and asnaf students who do not have SPM certifications or attained poor SPM results by giving them a second chance to secure quality tertiary education and guaranteed job placements. Subsequently, they will be able to turn their lives around as well as bring their families out of the poverty cycle.
“YSD is proud to be part of such a meaningful education initiative which would also provide the students with potential opportunities to work abroad and gain more valuable exposure and experience in the future. We hope that this will in turn, propel them to achieve their ambitions and eventually allow them to give back to their community,” said YSD Chairman Y.A.M Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar.
TWI works closely with State Islamic Religious Councils to recruit 50 deserving candidates for the programme, who will complete 2 weeks of communications and personal development skills training and 4 months of internationally recognised certification courses in welding inspection and non-destructive testing. In addition, each of them will be granted a Green Card issued by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and an Oil & Gas Safety Passport (OGSP) certificate.
TWI is the world’s largest provider of welding technology and inspection-related training for individuals and companies. It is also a recognised provider of TVET certificate and diploma courses in Malaysia since 2016.
Since 2011, YSD had assisted 1,030 underprivileged students under the YSD Skill Enrichment programme to pursue TVET certifications, through collaborations with reliable education partners including the Ministry of Higher Education to fulfil talent needs in various industries.
